BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Some Erie County employees who lost their county take-home vehicle last year are once again driving county cars, according to a WQRZ-TV report. The increase in county take-home vehicles from 25 to 33 comes after the county cut the use of take-home vehicles in February 2005 from 43 to 26 at the height of a budget crisis. All but two of the take-home vehicles are trucks or SUVs. County Executive Joel Giambra said that the move to reissue take-home vehicles was made because using county-owned vehicles and tax-free gas was cheaper than mile reimbursement, according to the report. Another county official added that it simply wasn’t practical for employees who are on call 24 hours a day to be without their own county-issued car. The county’s legislature has submitted a resolution demanding that Giambra explain his policy for take-home cars, as well as county-issued cell phones.
