Toyota Motor Corp. has developed a plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Plug-in HV, which it will begin to test on public roads in Japan. Toyota also anticipates public road tests in the U.S. and Europe, but nothing has been decided yet, according to the Associated Press. Plug-in hybrids present an alternative to the rising costs of gasoline and the pollution caused by traditional engines. The Plug-in HV has a cruising range of eight miles as an electric vehicle. It can be recharged with a standard wall outlet, 1.5 hours at 200 volts and three or four hours at 100 volts. Charging may be done overnight when power demands are low.
