On Aug. 25, Conecuh County, Ala.-based Evergreen Transportation Co. announced that it is discontinuing its van fleet in Cantonment, Fla., according to al.com.
When the announcement was made, it was uncertain whether or not employees would be affected by the discontinuation. However, per the company's Web site, there are 125 units in the fleet, meaning potentially that 125 employees could be out of a job. Additionally, there would be cuts at the fleet's office, where 20 people worked.
In early August, the company filed for financial reorganization under Chapter 11 in federal bankruptcy court. During that time, Evergreen said it did not intend to lay off any of its employees at it six offices, including 350 drivers and 125 workers.
However, employees and the company said layoffs had taken place prior to the bankruptcy filing, which gave the company a $5 million line of credit from General Electric Credit Corp. The line of credit was intended to help the company fulfill obligations to customers, employees and vendors.
Evergreen hired Carriage Hill Partners for advice on restructuring or the possible sale of the company when if filed for bankruptcy. According to court records, the company paid the New York firm $50,000 a month. Additionally, the company requested $200,000 from a Virginia firm, stating that it didn't have enough money to renew license tags for trucks and trailers.
Kathy Till, a spokeswoman for the company, said there was no profitability with the van line, which prompted the decision to make the cut.
Further, she said demand for the vans, which mostly shipped drinks and paper, has dropped as customers struggle with their own budgets.
Evergreen has four other fleets offering flatbed and bulk hauling services, reports al.com.
