SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Rep. John Dougall, R-American Fork, has introduced a bill in the Utah state legislature that would eliminate vehicle safety inspections. The bill would take the money set aside for those inspections and use it to hire more highway patrol officers.

Specifically, the bill would eliminate the requirement that a vehicle owner must get a safety inspection prior to registering the vehicle; eliminate the requirement that vehicles must pass safety inspections before being operated; repeal the fee for safety inspections; and increase the registration fee for motor vehicles and motorcycles to offset the revenue the state is currently receiving from vehicle inspections.
