As of Dec. 17, most motor carriers are required by federal law to use electronic logging devices, or ELDs, to track truck driver hours of service. Whether you’ve waited until the last minute to flip the switch or you’re already running ELDs, here are some things you need to keep in mind to avoid citations, bad CSA scores, or unsatisfactory safety ratings.
A new law that will reclassify a first-time offense of texting while driving as a moving violation will go into effect on July 1, 2019 in Illinois and will boost the penalty for violators.
A distracted driving law that went into effect in Iowa a year ago has resulted in over 1,100 tickets for texting and driving. That translates into six times as many tickets issued as compared to the same time period in the prior year.
Federal officials have taken another step to make the transition to mandatory electronic devices less painful. If drivers are cited at roadside for not complying with the ELD rule come the Dec. 18 deadline, the citation will be a “no points cite” that will not affect the Safety Measurement System that feeds into CSA scores – until April 1.
