Now that GM dealers have enough ignition switch replacement parts on hand, the National Highway Traffic is spreading the word to vehicle owners who haven’t yet scheduled an appointment for the free safety recall remedy.
The automaker has now shipped thousands of repair kits for 2003-2007 vehicles. Owners of 2008-2011 models will receive a letter in early May confirming their inclusion in the recall.
The automaker's latest recall includes certain Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles as well as other Chevrolet, Saturn and Pontiac models.
The automaker is recalling 824,000 more vehicles to ensure they all have a current ignition switch.
All Saturn model years 2005-2010 are now available for purchase at any of the 3,400 Buick, Chevrolet and GMC GM Certified Used Vehicles dealers across the nation.
General Motors' President and CEO Fritz Henderson issued a statement regarding the Penske/Saturn termination, saying that the news was disappointing.
DETROIT – Penske would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets, while General Motors would continue production, on a contract basis, of the Saturn Aura, Vue, and Outlook.
GM plans to secure an agreement with a potential buyer later this year. The company has hired S.J. Girsky & Co. as an advisor for the transaction.
General Motors says it is "premature to speculate" on the sale of Saturn to the private equity firm.
Automakers are struggling to produce enough hybrid cars to meet the increased demand.
