The Arkansas Highway Commission has authorized the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) to raise speed limits on certain highways from 55 mph to 60 mph.
Texas now has more than 3,000 miles zoned at 75 mph or higher, and 575 miles posted at 80 mph.
While there are many similar driving laws across the United States, fleet managers should ensure that any driver that crosses state lines is aware of some of the more subtle differences from state-to-state.
The proposed rulemaking would amend the federal motor vehicle safety standards requiring OEMs to install speed limiters on trucks with a GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs. An electronic control module (ECM) would limit the maximum speed to no more than 68 mph. Many independent truckers, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), and the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) are opposed to the rulemaking.
The Ontario Trucking Association welcomes the idea, but other associations complain the rules violate NAFTA.
