The average fuel economy for new vehicles sold in January reached 25.1 mpg for an increase of 0.2 mpg from December, according to the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
The national average price of a gallon of gasoline fell 3.4 cents to $1.822 for the week ending Feb. 1, according to federal records.
The decline in national average gasoline prices driven by falling oil prices continued unabated with a 5.8-cent decline to $1.856 for the week ending Jan. 25, according to federal data.

The national average price of a gallon of unleaded stayed essentially flat for the week ending Dec. 28, as it increased eight tenths of a cent to $2.034 and has remained near $2 per gallon since late November.
The national price of gasoline remained essentially flat at $2.026 per gallon for the week ending Dec. 21, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The national average price of unleaded gasoline fell 1.6 cents to $2.037 for the week ending Dec. 14, according to federal data.
The University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute has shown a drop in average sales-weighted miles per gallon for the month of November.
