Delphi Automotive Systems has announced an agreement to provide telematics units for the Lexus LS 430 at the 2001 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Delphi showcased a Lexus LS 430 luxury sedan equipped with the Lexus Link at the show. Financial terms were undisclosed. Delphi's telematics modules provide two-way voice and data communications exchanges between the Lexus LS 430 and the Lexus Link call center. Delphi's telematics module integrates a global positioning satellite receiver, cell phone and digital signal processor. The module enables the driver to communicate with the call center using hands free operation. Delphi's telematics hardware in the Lexus LS 430 provide drivers with unique services such as: * Recordable memo -- This feature allows the driver or passengers to record a 5-minute personal message for replay; this feature also allows map directions from the call center to be recorded for playback while driving. * Automatic theft notification -- A silent signal is sent to the call center for vehicle tracking if an unidentifiable driver enters the car. * Diagnostic mode -- The driver is notified if there is a problem and the vehicle should be taken to a dealer for service. * Back-up battery -- This feature allows an emergency call to be made to the call center even if the car's battery is damaged or disconnected in an accident. Additional telematics services include: * Lock/unlock vehicle -- If the keys are locked in the vehicle or if the car is unlocked, the call center can be contacted by phone and the service will lock or unlock the vehicle. * Vehicle crash notification (automatic) -- When the front airbags deploy, an automatic call is placed to the call center providing vehicle information including global positioning satellite (GPS) location and vehicle owner. * Manual emergency calling -- During an emergency, the driver can press the emergency button that contacts the call center. Emergency calls receive a higher priority by the advisors. * Roadside assistance -- After pressing the service button, a service call is placed to the call center that provides vehicle location and driver data. This information helps the tow truck driver find the stranded car owner. * Concierge services -- These services include hotel and restaurant reservations, directions, ordering flowers and event tickets and many other services. Delphi's telematics systems can be tailored to meet the specific design requirements of any number of vehicle manufacturers, according to Delphi officials. Market studies indicate that 90 percent of all luxury vehicles will have telematics capability by 2005, emphasizing the importance of this rapidly growing market. "The flexibility offered by Delphi's telematics system allows a number of original equipment manufacturers to make these features available in their vehicles," said Robert W. Schumacher, Delphi's general director of Mobile MultiMedia. "Delphi is positioned as the market leader to supply telematics systems to consumers worldwide."
