A massive blizzard buries the East Coast. Heartland commuters are skidding through one of the coldest winters in recent years. So, as the Wall Street Journal asks, is it just a coincidence that auto makers are gearing up to convince even more of us that we need all-wheel drive vehicles? Whatever the case, there's no question that the auto industry's efforts to sell all-wheel drive are kicking into a higher gear, according to the Journal. A combination of factors -- a new generation of technology, cheaper all-wheel drive systems, relentless pressure to come up with features customers will pay a premium to have, and the rapid growth of "crossover" vehicles that blend elements of SUVs, minivans and cars -- could soon make all-wheel drive as common an option for car shoppers as anti-lock brakes, according to the Journal.
