Juriga told the outlet that Hyundai considered developing a diesel powertrain 4-5 years ago and backed away due to increased costs and the higher price of diesel fuel.
U.S. CAFE standards are ramping up during the 2017 to 2025 model years. Hyundai and Kia now offer a variety of alternative powertrain vehicles such as gasoline-electric hybrids, Kia's first battery-electric vehicle in the Kia Soul EV, and Hyundai's Tucson Fuel Cell hydrogen-powered SUV.
