The Michigan Department of Transportation is testing “machine vision devices” on two fleet vehicles to determine whether they can be attached to snow plows, police cars, or other government vehicles to passively map changing roadway conditions in the state, Detroit News reported.
The map database, which would include information such as dog-eared lane markings, potholes, cracks, and other unexpected features, could then be accessed by autonomous vehicles.
The pilot project is expected to be the first of its kind in the country.
