General Motors has begun offering OnStar Vehicle Insights, a telematics solution for fleet managers and drivers that can be added to 2015-model-year vehicles and newer, the company announced.
The system, which would compete with aftermarket telematics products, would offer vehicle location and driver performance data. Fleets must also add a connected vehicle services plan that costs $15.99 plus taxes per vehicle per month.
"We listened to our fleet customers’ feedback and have created a turnkey telematics solution," said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of General Motors Fleet. "OnStar Vehicle Insights helps simplify the fleet management process, allowing our fleet customers, large and small, to save time and money."
The system's features include real-time vehicle tracking; vehicle health such as mileage, oil life, and fuel efficiency; driver behaviors, and trips taken, including speeding data; and business insights on a simplified dashboard.
Additional tools include remote commands to lock, unlock and remotely start a vehicle; organized trip summaries; and driver-viewable behavior reporting for hard braking and other items.
The telematics product is compatible with most Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles from the 2015 model year. The Volt, City Express van, Low Cab Forward trucks, and GM vehicles without OnStar hardware would be excluded.
GM has been offering factory telematics solutions since 2014 when the company partnered with Telogis, which was later acquired by Verizon Connect. In April 2017, GM offered a Spireon FleetLocate system that joined other GM Fleet telematics solutions that include a version of Telogis Fleet for GM and GM's proprietary Commercial Link tool.
